1421: The Year China Discovered America by Gavin Menzies

This fascinating collection of information from Gavin Menzies challenged my perception of history as it was written when I was in school. The collection of information that he shares in this heavy paperback is somewhat speculative, but definitely insightful. Many of the stories seem to have at least a strong chance of being true.

While I realize that many of the assertions he makes are challenged by expert historians the overall context of his theory makes sense to me, and I look forward to future research.

I would tell other potential readers that this book was heavy and at times cumbersome in language and concept, but well worth the journey. Even if you don't agree with the premise, you can't help but be excited and inspired by the possibilities!

6 Sentences - Redbud Song

I found a new blog today, and I am very excited about it. The site is "6S" or Six Sentences. The idea is that a variety of authors submit stories in short six-sentence shots. I decided to write one myself. Here it is, unedited.

There is a musical outside my window though the orchestra is obscured; the heart shaped leaves of the redbud tree shelter the hearty song of at least six birds, each a different variety. There are flashes of brightest blue and russet, the quavering warble of a Cape May, and a single Crow sitting stoically on a high sunlit branch. The bluebirds are my favorite, flitting to and fro, their color bright as their tiny soprano voices against every possible backdrop. There a goldfinch gently lit, barely bowing the thinnest of stems, and off he flies in search of a thistle seed. A car drives past, radio loud, the thump-a-rump of the sound system scattering players from the stage. My tree is silent, one crow watching the sun track lower in the western sky.
